How an update to your POS software works, step by step

An update is offered, never forced. A checked backup is taken before it installs, and each update is checked first.

In Lite, Basic, Professional

A new version of SellyPOS may be ready while the shop is busy, and it helps to know what happens before you choose anything. When you update POS software in SellyPOS, the owner or a manager decides when it installs, a backup is taken first, and each update is checked before it is applied.

Nothing installs until the owner or a manager chooses

A newer version is offered quietly. It is never offered during a sale, and it is never forced on you. Only the Owner or a Manager is told about it, and they can install it now, be reminded tomorrow, or skip that version.

SellyPOS looks for a newer version by itself, once a day at most. If you turn that daily check off, the computer makes no request at all. Checking by hand always works.

For example, the owner reads the offer after the shop closes. They choose Remind me tomorrow, and the cashiers carry on exactly as before.

A backup is taken before anything changes

When the owner chooses Update now, SellyPOS makes a backup of the shop’s data and checks it. If the backup cannot be written, the update does not start, and SellyPOS says why. The last three before-update backups are kept.

For example, a till session is open when the owner presses Update now. The confirmation warns that a session is open, and the owner reads that warning before going ahead.

Each update is checked before it is applied

Every update is checked before anything is applied. SellyPOS checks that the update really comes from SellyPOS and that no part of it has been changed. A changed update is refused.

Windows may still show a warning about an unknown publisher when you run a SellyPOS installer you downloaded. That is a separate matter from the check above, and it has its own help article on the unknown publisher warning.

After an update, SellyPOS says what is running

When the update has installed, SellyPOS opens again. It says which version is running and what its checks found. The report shows the same summary you saw before you chose to install.

An older version will not open newer data

If one computer runs an older version of SellyPOS than the data it opens, that version will not open the data. It offers only two choices: install the newer version, or restore a backup.
