Update SellyPOS to the newest version

Install a newer version of SellyPOS. Choose when to update, let SellyPOS back up your data first, then read its report when it opens again.

Applies to Lite, Basic, Professional · Updated 3 Nov 2026

A newer version of SellyPOS can be offered to you. This guide shows how to install it, what SellyPOS does first, and how to see that it worked. Only the Owner or a Manager can install an update.

What you need

  • An Owner or Manager sign-in. Only these two roles can install an update.
  • An internet connection, so SellyPOS can download the update.
  • Any sale in progress finished first. An update is never offered during a sale.

Steps

  1. Find the offer. When a newer version is ready, a small chip with its version number appears in the status strip. Only the Owner or a Manager sees it, and it does not show while a sale is in progress.

  2. Open the Updates card. Press the chip, or open Help > About. The Updates card shows the new version and what is new in it.

  3. Choose one of the three choices. Update now starts the update. Remind me tomorrow asks you again tomorrow. Skip this version stops this version from being offered again on this computer.

  4. Read the confirmation. It asks you to confirm the update. If a till session is open, the confirmation says so, so read it before you confirm.

  5. Wait for the backup. SellyPOS makes a backup of your shop’s data and checks it. If the backup cannot be written, the update does not start, and SellyPOS tells you why.

  6. Answer Windows’ question. SellyPOS closes, and Windows asks for an administrator’s approval. Choose Yes, and wait for the installation to finish.

  7. Read the sentence after the update. SellyPOS opens again and says which version is running and whether its checks passed. The report also shows the same summary you saw before you chose to install. It stays on Help > About until you have seen it.

Check for an update by hand

You can look for a newer version at any time. Open Help > About and press Check now.

Turn off the daily check

SellyPOS checks for a newer version by itself, once a day at most. To stop that, open Help > About, go to the Updates card and switch off Check for updates automatically. With the check off, SellyPOS makes no request at all. Checking by hand still works. Only the Owner or a Manager can change this switch.

If something is not as you expect

  • If you decline Windows’ administrator question, SellyPOS starts again on the old version.
  • If the backup cannot be written, the update does not start. Read the reason SellyPOS gives, then try again.
  • If a download stops, it starts again from the beginning.
  • If an older version of SellyPOS is opened with data from a newer version, it refuses to open that data. It offers only two choices: install the newer version, or restore a backup.
  • If Windows or your browser warns about the installer you downloaded, see the unknown publisher warning or the download warning in your browser.

Questions people ask

Is it safe to update SellyPOS?

Before an update installs, SellyPOS takes a backup and checks it. If the backup cannot be written, the update does not start. The last three before-update backups are kept. Each update is checked for its signature and integrity, and a changed update is refused. A newer version is offered quietly, never during a sale, and it is never forced. The Owner or a Manager can install it now, be reminded tomorrow, or skip that version. An older version of SellyPOS refuses data written by a newer one. See software updates.

How do I turn off the check for new SellyPOS versions?

SellyPOS checks for a newer version by itself, once a day at most. Turn that check off, and the computer makes no request at all. Checking by hand always works. Even with the check on, an update is never forced. You can install it now, be reminded tomorrow, or skip that version. See software updates.
