Share a main product's leftover stock out to its variants
A main product can hold stock that none of its variants has yet. Share it out to the variants, or adjust the rest out, and the till sells the product once that is done.
3 things it does
See the stock still on your main product, and share it out to its variants
Basic and Professional
A product with variants still holds stock. How do I move it to the variants? A banner on the product page shows how much stock is on no variant. The Distribute stock window gives that stock to the variants, or adjusts the rest out through an ordinary stock adjustment.
Without it
You gave a product sizes or colours after it already had stock. That stock still sits on the main product, where no size or colour can sell it.

Give each variant its part, or adjust the rest out as an ordinary stock adjustment. You can close the window with stock still left.

The till will not sell a product until its stock is shared out

Why does the counter refuse a product that has variants? While stock is still left on the main product, the counter will not sell it or any of its variants. In search, that product's row is dimmed and says Distribute stock first.
Without it
A product has sizes or colours, but some of its stock still sits on the main product. A customer asks for a size, and the cashier sells it before anyone has checked the count for that size.
With it
The counter refuses the product and its variants until the leftover stock is shared out. In search, the product's row is dimmed and says Distribute stock first.
A link on the counter takes you to the Distribute stock window if you are allowed to change products. Once no stock is left on the main product, the product sells again.

Share a product's stock out by place, lot and device, and see what is left
Basic and Professional
If a product is kept in two places or in lots, can I share out each part? The Distribute stock window shares stock out per location and per lot, and device by device, and shows the amount still left as you go. Each location's shares are saved as one numbered stock adjustment that can be voided.
Without it
The same product sits in more than one place, or in lots with different expiry dates. Working out which piece goes to which variant is slow, and easy to get wrong.
With it
The Distribute stock window shares each place and lot out to the variants, and shows what is still left as you go. Each place's shares are saved as one numbered stock adjustment that you can void.
For each one you give a quantity to each variant, and a device is given one at a time. The amount still left updates as you type, so you can see what is still to share.
