# Set up a discount promotion

> Set a discount on chosen products between two days. Enter the details, pick the products, check the review, then activate it. Stop or copy it later.

A promotion takes a percentage or an amount off chosen products, between two days. You set it up once on the Promotions page. After that, the till applies it by itself when one of the chosen products is scanned or added.

## What you need

- The permission to manage promotions, `promotion.manage`. Without it, you cannot make or change a promotion.
- The products you want on promotion, already in Products.
- The first day and the last day of the promotion.
- For printing shelf labels, the permission to print labels. Without it, the Print labels button does not show.

1. **Open the Promotions page.** Go to Products, then Promotions. The list shows each promotion with its discount, its days, its product count and its status.

2. **Choose New promotion.** The promotion opens at the first step, Details.

3. **Enter the details.** Type a name. Choose a percentage off or an amount off, and type the value with digits only. Enter the start day and the end day. Both days are included. A description is optional.

4. **Choose the products.** Type part of a product's name, even with a small typo, and the matches appear. A scanned code adds its product straight away. Use the category, brand or supplier filters to narrow the list, then tick the products you want. Add all adds the current results, up to a limit.

5. **Read the review.** The review shows a summary of the promotion and any conflict with another promotion.

6. **Save it as a draft, or activate it.** A draft is kept on the list until you activate it. Activate starts the promotion.

7. **Stop or copy it later.** Open the promotion from the list. Stop now ends it early. Duplicate starts a new draft with the same details. Print labels takes the promotion's products to the label screen.

## If something is not as you expect

- Activation is refused where a product already has a promotion on the same day. The review names the products and the other promotion. Remove that product from this promotion, then activate it again.
- A promotion never takes a product's price below its minimum selling price, however large the discount is.
